She is our mother, and we are proud of her.

Aisha Bint AbuBakr (RA) was the daughter of the closest companion of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr was such an exemplary believer that he got the title of Al-Siddiq during his lifetime, and of course, after the Prophet’s (SAW) death, he became the first Khalifah.

Aisha’s elder sister, Asma, was also a renowned female Companion of the Prophet (SAW). Her role is highlighted in the Prophet’s biography during the time of his migration, when she would supply food to him and Abu Bakr.

Asma’s husband was the famous Companion, one of the ten who were given the glad tidings of Paradise, Zubayr ibn al-Awwam. Their son, Abdullah ibn Zubayr, was the first child born in the new Islamic state of Madinah, and his birth was an occasion of great happiness for the Muslims. Another son of Zubayr, Urwah, was one of the most celebrated scholars and judges of Madinah amongst the generation to follow. He was probably the most dedicated student of his Aunt, Aisha Bint Abu Bakr.

As is obvious, Aisha (RA) had a prestigious family and was surrounded by model Companions and early Muslims since her childhood till the end of her life. This had many good effects in her life that gave her the qualities and opportunities necessary to become the most influential female scholar amongst the Prophet’s Companions, and an exemplary mother to us.

She was raised in a Muslim household whose leader was As-Siddiq Abu Bakr. Naturally, she got the best education. Additionaly, she had the capacity to absorb that education and make use of it with her keen intellect and memory.

Az Zuhri said, “If Aisha’s (RA) knowledge is compiled and compared to the knowledge of all women, her knowledge will surely excel theirs.”  (Women Around the Messenger, pg 65)

And of course, the best of the opportunities that Aisha (RA) received was her marriage to the Prophet (SAW).

The Messenger (SAW) said to Aisha, “You have been shown to me in (my) dreams on three nights. An angel was carrying you in a silken cloth and said to me, ‘This is your wife.’ And when I uncovered it; behold, it was you. I then said, ‘If this dream is from Allah, He will cause it to come true.’ (Bukhari and Muslim)

This was not only a great blessing Allah (SWT) bestowed on Aisha (RA), but it was a blessing for her children and us as well. The amount of knowledge of the Prophet’s intimate life that she narrated couldn’t be narrated by any of the Male Companions of the Prophet (SAW), and that would have been an extremely great loss for the Ummah.

A Source of Knowledge For The Generations to Come

Can you imagine not knowing the rulings and etiquettes of love and intimacy between spouses, and of the Prophet’s habits and interactions within the household? Of course, other wives of the Prophet (SAW) did narrate from Him, but Aisha (RA) was of the greatest narrators.

‘…by Allah, the Divine Inspiration never came to me while I was under the blanket of any woman amongst you except her (Aishah).” (Bukhari)

But she was not just a mere narrator of Hadiths of the Prophet (SAW). She was also a jurist, a very intelligent one. And being such, her Hadiths are often given precedence over non-jurist narrators.

Al Hakim mentions in al-Mustadrak, “One-fourth of the rule of Shariah was narrated on the authority of Aishah. (Women Around the Messenger, pg 65)

It’s another of Allah’s blessings that she had great students, including her nephew ‘Urwah ibn az-Zubayr, who was a sincere scholar. Being her mahram, he had more access than others to her time and knowledge, and became the prime narrator of her Hadiths.

Do you see how Allah (SWT) facilitated the vast deal of knowledge from Aisha to reach us?

She was the youngest and the most beloved wife of the Prophet (SAW). She lived a long time after his death, and her long life gave her the opportunity to spread knowledge.

Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari said, “Whenever a hadith was unclear to us (the Companions), and we asked Aisha (RA) about it, we always gained knowledge about that Hadith from her.” (Women Around the Messenger, pg 65)
