It was summer time when Ahmed and Zaki planned to dive inside the ocean for fun. Ahmed started searching for precious shells which he promised to gift his sister Ayesha. “Hey Zaki, look at this!” Ahmed’s voice elated in excitement. Zaki threw an uninteresting glance at the radiant pearl and stated, “Throw it Ahmed, it’s just a shining stone, nothing special.” Soon after Zaki had swum further, Ahmed hurriedly placed this valuable pearl in a small metal box which he carried especially to collect souvenirs. The pearl was available to both of them, but Ahmed was the one who attained it because he comprehended its significance and safeguarded it. Quran is available to everyone, but only few understand the value of memorizing the divine knowledge and it only enters a heart which holds high veneration of it.

Starting the memorization takes a lot of strength and continuous perseverance. I remember when I started hifdh school, my mind was flushed with various questions, “Why am I doing it? Will I be able to make it? If I forget it, will I be punished severely? Arabic isn’t my language and I do not understand what I am learning, what is the point?” Hold on my dear reader, I know, you might be facing problems and dilemmas, but Inshallah with the help of Allah swt I will try my best to provide the best guide to learn the Quran.

“And they were not commanded except to worship Allah (being) sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah (poor due). And that is the correct religion.”[Quran 98:5]

Sincerity was stated first, as true intention should be the basis for every good act. If good intentions aren’t rooted in our hearts, nevertheless, how exquisite our actions may be, it grows valueless as Allah (swt) knows us by our hearts and with what we intended. Growing up, my dad used to give me an example of a marvelous skyscraper, which is built by the finest construction companies and composed of the most expensive materials, but what if the foundation isn’t strong? Everything will be shattered and every effort will become useless! The stronger our base will be, the more beautiful and polished our outcome will become.

Allah swt says in the noble Quran ‘And recite the Qur’aan with Tarteel.’ (73:4) Try to avoid wrong pronunciations and recite with beautiful recitation. “Tajweed and fluency,” my Qari Sahab always told us from the age of eleven. He accentuated the idea that our wordings and rhythm should be in an ordered manner, every lafz should be precise and readily understood. If you feel constant stammering and complexity in reciting, hearing Quran by an online Qari will be extremely helpful where ayahs can be repeated several times and your Qirat can improve tremendously.

Give an early start.

Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night and [also] the Qur’an of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed. And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.”

The secret of time is that it can never be brought back as it is constantly flowing just like a waterfall and never stopping for anyone. To stick with it, takes a lot of effective measures and the most indispensable thing is to create a productive time table. We often have days when we are engrossed with important meetings, works which cannot be delayed whatsoever, and exhausting to-do lists. Enhance everything by giving a tinge of an early start. Try waking up forty minutes before Fajr and start memorizing Quran, this will not only help you to learn effectively but also give you a chance to pray tahajud prayer and eventually your Fajr prayer will also be performed at the most optimum time. As Allah swt says in Surah Bani Israel,

Once we have prepared ourselves, consistency should be our next step. Sometimes, we complete everything and the major issue comes when we fall in the trap of becoming inconsistent. And the easiest path is to envision something reliable. Find your perfect mental capability and match it with your timetable. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Take up good deeds only as much as you are able, for the best deeds are those done regularly even if they are few.” There WILL be days when everything will appear tough and laziness may overtake you, but if you strive to achieve something prolific, you have to become persistent!

Ambience affects our life more than we think. Try visualizing a nine month old baby, who when surrounded with crying babies, will also start crying. If everyone is joyful, he will also start giggling, even though he is not aware of feelings, thinking patterns, and the environment. However, there’s a natural inclination in responding to the affirmative, by connecting with the environment. If we surround ourselves with friends who are dedicated in learning the Quran and not wavering in any circumstance, this will eventually, boost our enthusiasm and resoluteness on this path of success.

These are some quick and practical tips to memorize Quran.

  1. Get your intentions clear and try focusing on this aim just to attain Allah’s pleasure.
  2. Start treading by taking baby steps, learn 5 or 6 ayahs daily. Don’t stress over that it might take you forever to memorize, but worry to learn it coherently with correct pronunciations.
  3. Try contemplating on the meanings because when we learn with understanding, it results in higher cognizance.
  4. Make it a part of life. Every time you stand for prayer, read the new lesson which you learnt and in the next rakah you can review the last lesson which you had memorized earlier. When performing chores, keep on reading Quran in your mind.
  5. Surround yourself with a positive circle. Sit with those who remind you of Allah (swt) and who show you the beauty of practicing Islam and encourage you throughout this journey.

May Allah (swt) makes this blessed aim of yours successful and make you a best follower of this religion. I really hope you found this article helpful and I would love to know which tip you think is the best? Share your thoughts in the comment section below! Jazakallah for reading!
