Read more of the Qur’an

It may sound like an obvious thing to do, but one of the most effective ways to strengthen your relationship with the Qur’an is to be consistent in your reading and recitation.

Not once or twice a week reading, but actually spending few minutes a day reading the Qur’an. This will help you make a habit of consistently reading the Qur’an, and before you know it, you have become so familiar with the words of Allah (swt). A good tip is also to read the surahs that you may not normally read during salah.

Think about it. Productivity experts say that it takes several days of consistently practising a new habit, for it to stick. It is the same way when you build a daily relationship with the Qur’an. The more you read, the more the words become ingrained in your heart, and the more the Qur’an becomes your go-to book.

Ponder upon the words of Allah

There is a whole lot of difference between reading the Qur’an and pondering on the words. The latter brings you to a new level of understanding, love for and addiction to the Qur’an.

During the revelation of the Qur’an, the Prophet(Saw) was known to seclude himself in the cave of Hira to ponder. In fact, he did this before the Qur’an was revealed, and that was how angel Jibril met him for the first revelation.

Pondering on the words of the Qur’an helps you to decipher deeper meanings to the words of Allah. It also helps us to appreciate the supremacy of Allah and His majestic nature. It pushes you to want to know more about Islam, the lives of the Prophets and everything that Allah has spoken about in the Qur’an.

Another benefit of pondering on the words of the Qur’an is that it improves your level of faith and conviction in the message of Prophet Muhammad. As long as you are following the right sources of information, you can develop a deeper relationship with the Qur’an just by reflecting on the words.

Keep a Qur’an handy always

How did we get addicted to our smartphones? Because we have it on us almost every minute of the day. When you have something with you nearly all hours of the day, it becomes something that you are very attached to.

Keeping the Qur’an handy will actually help you achieve the other two points stated above pretty easily. If it is not practical to carry a physical copy of the Qur’an, there are different Qur’an apps for mobile devices that will ensure that you always have a Qur’an handy for easy consultation.

Read other religious texts connected to the Qur’an

You may not know it, but reading other books of Islam will improve your relationship with the Qur’an. Imagine reading the seerah of the holy Prophet(Saw) and learning about his life and that of his companions. It connects you to the history of Islam and the purpose of our creation, such that you will want to read more of the Qur’an and abide by what Allah has laid down for us.

Deepen your relationship with the Qur’an by understanding

Understanding the Qur’an is also critical to strengthening your relationship with the Qur’an. Imagine that you understand Allah’s words without the need for translation. Not only will this improve the quality of your salah, it will also improve the love you have for the book of Allah.

In your quest to build a relationship with the Qur’an, make learning Arabic a priority because it will help you understand the Qur’an in a way that no translation can.

Make dua

“Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.”(Qur’an 28:56)

This verse is proof that we need to make a lot of dua in our quest to develop a deeper relationship with the Qur’an because as Allah(set) has said, he is the only one that can guide a person onto the straight path.

Remember to ask Allah (swt) to grant you the sweetness of having a strong relationship with the Qur’an, and to make a source of light for you in this life and in the next.
